Questions About Fraxel

What kinds of skin conditions does the Fraxel Laser treat?
Fraxel Laser Treatment is ideal for treating skin discolorations such as sun spots or age spots, pigmented lesions, acne and other scars, periorbital (eye) and midface wrinkles, and it’s also ideal for overall skin tightening and rejuvenation.

How is Fraxel different from other laser treatments?
Before Fraxel, there were two types of available laser treatments. The first type – ablative laser treatment – involves vaporizing skin cells at a very high temperature. Although effective, ablative laser treatments have significant side effects and a lengthy healing period. The other type of treatment – non- ablative treatment, including Laser Hair Removal, Fotofacial, or IPL, does not treat the same array of skin conditions with the effectiveness of the Fraxel. Fraxel treatments offer the effects of ablative laser treatments without the side effects and healing time.

How does Fraxel work?
Fraxel works by using laser technology to target aging and sun-damaged skin cells. The laser creates microscopic “wounds” deep beneath the outer most epidermal layers of the damaged skin. Fraxel laser treatments trigger the body’s natural healing process, accelerating the growth of collagen and new healthy skin cells.

What are the risks of Fraxel Laser Treatments?
Swelling and redness are the most common side effects from treatment. If swelling does occur, it is usually minimal and will subside within a day or two. Redness may occur and will fade within a few days. There is a very limited risk of infection and scarring.

How many treatments will I need?
Clinical studies suggest that on average, an effective treatment regimen is 3 to 5 sessions 2 to 4 weeks apart. Depending on your condition and schedule, you and your physician may space treatment sessions even further apart. Results are immediate and progressive. Optimal improvement is usually visible in about 2 to 3 months. This time frame and treatment structure allow for complete healing and replacement of damaged tissue with new collagen and elastin and viable healthy skin cell growth.

How are Fraxel Laser Treatments performed?
Prior to treatment, your skin will be cleansed. A topical anesthetic is applied to the treatment area for approximately 60 minutes before treatment. The actual laser treatment takes about 20-25 minutes to complete.

Is treatment painful?
Most patients describe the treatment as having a “prickling sensation.” The topical anesthetic and air cooling alleviates most discomfort.
