Pre- and Post- Treatment Instructions

Before Your Treatment

• Do not take any food or water by mouth for at least six hours prior to your appointment.
• Dress comfortably in loose-fitting clothes to enable proper vital signs monitoring and comfort.
• Bring a responsible, trusted adult with you to assist you and take you home following surgery.
• Take any pre-medications prescribed to you, as directed.
• Prior to surgery, speak to your doctor about any prescriptions you are taking.
• Make sure all of your questions or concerns are addressed prior to surgery.
• Avoid aspirin, Advil, Aleve, or other NSAIDs for at least a week before surgery. Do not take St. John’s Wort of high doses of vitamin E prior to treatment.

After Your Treatment

• Wear any pressure bandages or dressings that are placed, as directed.
• Take antibiotics and prescription pain medication as prescribed. You must not take prescription pain medications on an empty stomach and must not drive or operate heavy machinery while taking prescription medications, because they may make you drowsy.
• If you are prescribed a healing supplement, continue taking it as directed.
• You may be more comfortable on a soft diet for several days.
• Ice packs may be used for the first 24 hours at a rate of 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off.
• Call the office immediately if you have any questions, concerns, or if you feel that something is wrong with your surgical site or healing process.
• Return to the office for all follow-up appointments as recommended.
• Sleep with you head elevated and above the heart, especially while experiencing swelling of the surgical area.
• Avoid activities that may result in injury to the surgical area while it heals.
