Jaw Surgery

Orthognathic surgery, or jaw surgery is intended to correct bite problems such as malocclusion, an open bite, over bite, and under bite that cannot be corrected with orthodontic treatment alone. Orthognathic surgery involves repositioning the jawbone in order to achieve a proportionate aesthetic result while correcting "bite" problems. These procedures are performed in close consultation with your treating orthodontist, and orthodontic treatment is required before and after surgical treatment.

Orthognathic surgery can correct the following conditions:

  • Difficulty chewing, biting, or swallowing
  • Chronic jaw-joint pain, headaches, and migraines
  • Bite misalignments (open bite, over bite, under bite)
  • Facial injuries or birth defects
  • Receding chin
  • Protruding jaw
  • Chronic mouth breathing
  • Sleep-breathing disorders
